#10 Saint Paul’s College (6-22) and #7 Virginia State University (13-17) began the men’s action tonight as VSU was able to hold off St. Paul’s 76-67, led by Trey Mines 26 points. J.C. Chaney led VSU with 14 rebounds as the Trojans out-rebounded Saint Paul’s College 47-30 to move on to the second round.
The Tigers began the game well going on a 15-6 early on to take a 21-16 lead in the first half. St. Paul’s College ended the first on top 37-35 in a half that saw five ties and four lead changes.
Mines made most of his points in the second half as he pulled VSU’s lead to 59-50, the largest lead by either team in the second half. The Trojans held off any late comebacks by the Tigers to take the 76-67 win.
