2009 CIAA Men’s Championship Johnson C. Smith vs. Virginia Union 2/28/09

Johnson C. Smith used an all around team effort to bring the CIAA trophy to Charlotte for the second year in a row. They beat #1 Virginia Union 70-63 Saturday night in a game where they showed pure determination in the winding moments of the second half.

Tavaris Little threw down a dunk to crush VUU’s hopes of winning the game. Game MVP Jerry Hollis led the Golden Bulls with 19 points and five rebounds.

VUU Trojan forward Gregg Thondique score 23 points and tallied 13 rebounds and four assists. But he also had five turnovers to lead his team.

JSCU had a 34-27 lead at the end of the first half and held back a second quarter rally by Virginia Union. This was a game that you could feel how bad The Golden Bulls wanted the championship. If not only for the lady Golden Bulls who had just won the women’s tournament less than an hour before, for the hometown Charlotte fans that made noise at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

They hit the right shots when they needed to and that’s why the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls are the 2009 64th Annual CIAA Basketball Tournament Champions.

It was a great game. Steve Joyner J. C. Smiths coach is from Winston Salem as well as the Cokers. He is also a longtime friend and confidant. Winston Salem is truly blessed to have two native sons as outstanding as Steve Joyner And Willard Coker.
