The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls defeated the Virginia State Trojans 63-56 Friday night to move on to play the winner of the St. Augustine’s-Virginia Union contest for the championship.
Time Warner Cable Arena had a great crowd Friday night to watch an exciting matchup that was 32-30 favoring the Trojans at the half after each team exchanged baskets. VSU’s Jacobe Simpson, a Charlotte native, led all scorer’s with nine points in the first half.
The Golden Bulls held the lead early in the second half until Trojan guard Ricardo Lipscomb hit a three pointer as the shot clock expired. JSCU responded with three straight baskets and a 48-42 lead with just under thirteen to play.
Virgina State, who shot well in the first half at 48%, got cold in the second (28.6%) and weren’t able to match the points scored by the Golden Bulls. The Golden Bulls shot 50% in the second half and 42% overall led by Jerry Hollis and Ryan Scott with 16, and Ronald Thornhill with 15.
The Trojans refused to give up though and cut the Golden Bulls lead to two points with 2:06 left to play. They would never get any closer than that as JSCU went 6-10 on free throws and a great ending capped by an exclamation dunk by Brian Mobley.
